Yam Yam is a zine documenting Black Country slang, created as a way to preserve and celebrate a dialect I grew up with. These words and phrases, commonly used among my family and community, form an important part of my cultural identity, carrying humour, rhythm, and a strong sense of place. By bringing them into a printed format, the project aims to elevate everyday language that is often overlooked or misunderstood, framing it as something worthy of attention and appreciation.
Produced within a single day, the zine embraces a minimal aesthetic driven by necessity. This constraint led to a focus on bold typography as the primary storytelling device, allowing the language itself to take centre stage and carry the narrative. The stripped-back design highlights the expressive quality of the words, encouraging readers to engage with their sound, tone, and meaning in a direct and immediate way.
